Bowers’ Third-Grader Attends Innovations Banquet
Lucia Reyes, a third-grader at Bowers Elementary, represented our school district at the 2016 Women of Innovations Awards Banquet on April 6 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.
(That’s Lucia third from the left in the photo -- in the white dress and bow -- beside her mom, Geraldine.)
The event recognized women accomplished in science, technology, engineering, math and those who are involved in their community - and was geared mostly to high school age students through professionals.
However the Connecticut Invention Convention asked just four younger students from across the state to attend.
Lucia has already qualified for the Invention Convention state finals and she displayed her invention -- a spray bottle called “Sprinkle Twinkle.” The spray is intended to help prevent cavities and is designed so students could use it after eating meals in school , when they don’t have access to the their toothbrush.,
There was a “networking hour” at the banquet, and Lucia had a chance to mingle before the dinner and awards portion.
“It was an absolute privilege to hear the stories of so many successful-creative women and students,” said he mom, Geraldine Reyes, adding that Lucia was excited “because she got to share about her invention with a lot of people including most of the women that later would receive awards.”
Lucia will be at the district wide Science Fair with Invention Contention at Illing on Saturday, April 23 and then at the state Invention Convention finals at UConn on April 30.
