Verplanck Students Get Free Running Shoes

A bronze-medal winning Olympic runner visited Verplanck Elementary School on Friday and had inspiring words for members of the school’s running club.

Oh, and she also had 60 brand new pairs of Asics running shoes to give away.

Deena Kastor, 42, who finished third in the women's marathon at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, help hand out the running shoes to kids assembled in bleachers in a field outside the school, as TV crews and newspaper reporters and photographers watched.

The shoes had been donated by Asics in conjunction with a running store in West Hartford that is also involved with the Manchester Road Race. Verplanck teacher Deanna Frankovitch, who oversees the running club, also help orchestrate the event.

The Hartford Courant has a nice story and a few more pictures.
