Transition from Middle School to High School:

Challenges Students Face

                                                                                       Physical and Emotional Challenges include: New Teachers, New Principal , more students, new expectations, more rigorous academics and discipline system, balancing independence and maintaining family connections, less direct imput from parents

Social Challenges include: Establishing new social connections, balancing work and social life, managing a part time job, pressure to engage in delinquent behavior.

Academic Challenges include: expectations to develop an assertive learning style, organizational skills, study habits, taking responsibility for decisions regarding academic tracks and course selection, making decisions about college and what to do after high school.

How can parents help ease this transition?

Attend High School Course Planning Night and other events at MHS!

Talk with your student about the changes they will experience and keep communication open.

Learn about school routines and time tables.

Practice organizational skills with your student.

Discuss emergency and safety issues.




Help your student set priorities.

Be interested and enthusiastic!

Keep in touch with teachers and counselors.

8th Grade Tour

During the winter 8th grade students visit MHS to get a tour and introduction to staff at the high school

Course Planning Night

Parents and students come to MHS to tour the building and learn about the various Academic Departments and support services offered


Entering Freshman begin school a day before the upperclassmen. Students are able to follow their new schedules, meet their teachers and learn about the many opportunities available to them without the distraction of upperclassmen.

School to Home Connection

Teachers and other staff are expected to keep in contact with parents. Parents can reach staff members by email or by phone via Parent Link to leave voicemail messages ((860) 647-5088).

Extra Curricular Activities

There are many extra curricular activities offered at MHS, from athletics to after school clubs and organizations. Check MHSRedline for continuous updates about what's going on at MHS. Also look out for the involvement fair at the start of the school year.
