Martin Happenings:

Mustang Weekly Spotlight: Third Grade
Math in Third Grade:

Math in third grade has been very exciting! Everyone is working on fluency in math facts! We are racing around the math facts raceway! As math ninjas, we have focused on approaching problem solving with focus, perseverance, and stamina! In this photo we are collaboratively working on following the steps to solve a word problem.

We are also learning to integrate technology into our daily math practice by utilizing “Rosie” our Smartboard.  So far, we have used our Smartboard for skill review, interactive mini lessons, and problem solving. In this photo, we are playing an interactive place value game called Pico, Fermi, Bagel.

Reading in Third Grade:

Third grade readers have been working on Reading Stamina! Third grade goal for end of year is focused reading for 30 minutes. We have successfully reached 25 minutes!
Students are enjoying leveled books and working to stop and jot while they read to help during partner talk!

Any book a student enjoys, they illustrate the cover and share it!

We also are coming to an end of Unit 1: Building a Reading Life. We have gone on a journey with Edward Tulane while incorporating partner talk, envisioning, learning about character, and understanding a story. Above are students envisioning while we read.

Writing in Third Grade:

In writing this year, we have been exploring all phases of the writing process, from pre-writing to publishing! Students have worked to revise their pieces using various strategies, including the use of a partner for feedback. We are working to publish our second piece of writing: a personal narrative. Students have worked to add in dialogue, sensory details, as well as inner thoughts and feelings to get readers excited about their stories!

Other Third Grade Happenings:

Third Graders spent the days leading to Thanksgiving using online resources to research the Native Americans and Pilgrims. Harvard researched shelters and homes, Yale researched foods they ate, and Dartmouth researched the clothing they wore. We created murals and hosted a Gratitude Luncheon to say thank you to our behavior tech and social worker for their amazing work in our school!
