INSIDE ILLING

Sept. 11-15

A weekly newsletter for the

Illing Middle School community.
Our first days of school have been busy and exciting. We have dozens of photos capturing scenes from Seventh-Grade First Day as well as our first "classroom snapshot" (a feature you will find in this newsletter every week). Looking ahead, we have two meetings Tuesday in the cafe -- at 6 p.m. for eighth-grade parents and guardians interested in the spring DC trip, followed at 7 p.m. by our first PTA meeting.

A GRAND OPENING

And so it began! Seventh-graders arrived last Wednesday and we have even more photos on the district Facebook page that captured the activities and excitement.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

A priority this year: building a strong school community. The PTA plays a crucial role and at Tuesday's meeting our PTA officers -- Kayle Gagnon (president), Krista Tuohey (VP), Rich Walsh- (treasurer) and Kim DeBaise (secretary) -- will explain how you can get involved. Family liaison Alex Cotto will also be there.

NEW PARKING LOT PROCEDURES

For safety sake (and to keep everyone moving), we need parents and guardians who are picking up children after school to drive through to the left of these cones and wait in the larger area of the parking lot near Middle Turnpike.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

SPORTS

Dozens of students stayed after school Thursday for fall sports meetings. (That's Coach E-M with the cross-country team above.) The fall coaches are:
  • Boys Soccer: Brian McCarthy
  • Girls Soccer: Noelle Avakian
  • Cross Country: Clyde Etienne Modeste and Kathy Kapa
  • Cheer: Andy Sundara and Sam Greco
Athletic Director Dan Bebyn oversees things and can be reached at b21dbeby@mpspride.org.

CLASSROOM SNAPSHOT
Pedro, an eighth-grader, is shown working with teacher Kristiann Nieves on an activity involving antonyms during language arts class on Friday. "Students are empowered when they have a robust vocabulary," she said, "and it's great to not just know what a word means, but also know words that are the opposite."
INSIDE ILLING is compiled by Jim Farrell, the district's communications director, based mostly on contributions from IMS staff and students. He can be reached at b11jfarr@mpspride.org or 860-268-6377.
