Buckley Student Earns First Prize In National PTA Contest

Carina Brown, a second-grader at Buckley Elementary, is the district’s first-ever national first place winner in the PTA Reflections Contest.

“We’re very proud and very excited,” her mom, Jennifer said, adding that the theme of this year’s contest -- ‘Let Your Imagination Fly” -- was “just perfect for Carina.”

Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities were invited to participate.

Carina was one of three winners in the visual arts category (primary division) for a piece called  "My Great Adventure." The other winners in her division are from Utah and New York. You can see the full list of national winners here.

Carina’s project was done on two facing pages. On the left she had a two-dimensional drawing that is preceded by the words “There was a little girl who liked to draw cute pictures.”

On the opposite page, the cute picture comes to colorful, three-dimensional life -- thanks to glitter glue, air-dry clay and more.

“I kept telling her,” Jennifer, “you can do whatever you want.”

Other categories were dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition and photography.

As an Award of Excellence recipient, Carina gets:

  • A $200 cash award

  • A silver plated Reflections medallion

  • A certificate and letter signed by the National PTA President

  • Recognition in the annual PTA Reflections online gallery

Carina also was the winner at the district and state levels.

Other Manchester district-wide winners for Reflections Program were:

  • Jason Owen -  MHS for Literature

  • Garrett Pilney -  MHS for Photography

  • Sarah Klotzer -  MHS for Visual Arts

  • Leonardo Adduci -  Highland Park Elementary for Film

  • Alyssa Eisele - Martin Elementary for Literature

  • Damilare Akinsola -  Keeney Elementary for Visual Arts

  • Aureliana Brown - Bennet for Literature

  • Corinthia Saez -  Illing for visual arts

Damilare and Garret were, along with Carina, also were first-place state winners.

Congrats to all!
