The 10th annual Manchester High School JazzFest will be held in MHS’ Bailey Auditorium on Wednesday February 10. The public is welcome to attend free of charge beginning with the 4 p.m. performance by the professional UCONN Faculty Jazz Combo
The UCONN musicians, led by Associate Professor and pianist Earl MacDonald will play a variety music many different jazz eras. Former MHS faculty member Douglas Maher is a member of the UCONN group as a guitarist. Following the professional performance will be nine of the region’s top high school jazz ensembles. They are all coming to Manchester to perform a short concert for the audience, their peers, and a panel of expert jazz educators.
Once the high school portion begins they will play both contemporary and classic jazz ranging from hip-hop to Duke Ellington. MHS Band director Keith Berry says “ we’ve assembled a wonderful group of accomplished jazz ensembles who are coming to Manchester to perform and get feedback from our judges. I am always amazed at the high level of musicianship on display at this annual festival. Audiences are in for a great treat”.
A highlight of every MHS JazzFest is when the judging panel, all professional jazz performers, joins forces with the MHS Jazz Ensemble to perform for everyone in attendance.
