Washington, Keeney Community Event Draws Big Crowd
Many from the team that organized the ‘Back To School Barbecue’ held at Squire Village in August were back together Thursday, when a ‘Family Fun Night” drew about 300 people from the Washington and Keeney school communities to Mahoney Rec Center.
“It’s great to see so many people from across Manchester come together to offer families and children a night that is all about healthy fun and building a strong community together,” said Scott Ratchford, director of the district’s Office of Family and Community Partnership -- which was one of the event sponsors.
The town's Office of Neighborhoods and Families was also involved, as were the Manchester Police Department, and a host of other community organizations.
Families enjoyed dinner prepared by Brown Sugar catering and the district’s food services department, with donations from ShopRite and Highland Park Market.
Before and after eating people wandered among booth staffed by groups including the Manchester Early Learning Center, the Manchester Knights (youth football), ECHN, Manchester PTA, YWCA/Nike Tykes, Manchester Adult & Continuing Ed., Building Healthy Families, the Manchester Dept. of Public Health, the Youth Service Bureau and the MPS art department.
The high school jazz band performed and adding to the festivities were representatives of church groups, members of MHS sports teams, staff from the Manchester Parks and Recreation department, and staff from Washington and Keeney.
Ratchford said more Thursday’s event was limited to just two school communities because of the capacity of Mahoney Rec. He said more such events are being planned for later in the year to serve other schools.
