PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

August 2017

Dear Waddell Families,

I hope you have had an amazing summer!   While you have been reading, resting, and playing in the sun, we have been busy moving our school from Waddell Elementary School to our temporary site at Bennet Academy and getting the school ready for your return! The first day of school is Wednesday, September 6th, 2017, which will be a full day of school.  School hours are 8:55 am – 3:25 pm.

Important dates to remember for August and September:
August 31                   4:30 – 6:30 Open House and BBQ
September 6               First Day of School
September 13             First PTA Meeting

Please take a moment to look at our school website. It is updated frequently and contains important information including the student handbook, calendar, emergency closings and delays, PTA events, and other happenings at Waddell.   Additionally, each grade level has its own link on our school site that includes grade specific information such as interactive websites, grade level activities, and class news.   We also encourage you to visit the district and Board of Education links to stay abreast of the renovation for Waddell School and other district changes and information.

This upcoming school year, we are welcoming two new classroom teacher shifts to Waddell:  Ms. Hannah Mamaclay, who was a grade 2 teacher last year will now be joining our 3rd grade team, and Mrs. Karen Taylor, who was our Numeracy Coach will now be joining our 5th grade team.  Furthermore, Mrs. Amy Sanchez, our former Literacy Coach, will now be our Reading Consultant, working with tutors and students on specialized reading instruction.  We would also like to congratulate Ms. Kristina Gozzo and Ms. Devra Daigle, our newly appointed 2016-2017 PTA co-presidents!  We further encourage you to visit the PTA website and Facebook pages to view happenings throughout the year.

Another exciting educational experience that we will be offering will be clustering.  Our grade three team as well as two of our grade five teachers will be participating in an educational model where teachers specialize, one in math and one in reading, and work as a team to teach their classes.  For example, in grade 5, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Leahy will be working together.  Mrs. Taylor will teach math and Mrs. Leahy will be teaching reading.  At the beginning of the day, Mrs. Taylor will teach her homeroom class math and at the end of the day, Mrs. Leahy’s class will come to Mrs. Taylor to take math while Mrs. Taylor’s class goes to Mrs. Leahy’s room for reading.  The two teachers teach their homeroom classes writing, Social Thinking, and social studies.  The teachers are paired as follows:
Ms. Golino (math) and Ms. Daigle (reading)
Ms. Mamaclay (math) and Mrs. Medynski (reading)
Mrs. Taylor (math) and Mrs. Leahy (reading)
We are very excited to embark on this journey as our teachers have the opportunity to dive deeply into their content knowledge and specialized instruction.

On behalf of the Waddell family, we are looking forward to partnering with you as we continue to grow as a school and a community. With that in mind, you are invited to be an active participant at Waddell Elementary School.  Whether you are a classroom volunteer, a member of the PTA, attending a school event, or stopping by our Family Resource Center, we encourage you to be involved. Research on schools clearly demonstrates that family participation in their child’s school coincides with a greater likelihood of academic success for their child.

If you have questions or concerns that arise at any time, please do not hesitate to call or email.  A list of our staff with links to their webpages and email addresses can be found on our website.  I look forward to working with you as we open the new school year together!

Sincerely,

Kim Loveland
