What's happening in the Art studio at Highland Park?
Kindergarten: Basic Skills
Right now kindergarten students are learning the routines and expectations of the Art studio as well as foundational material handling skills. Material skills include "kindergarten coloring"*, cutting with scissors, and gluing. Many of the routines kindergarteners are becoming familiar with include safe use of the materials, sharing, direction following, and cooperation.
*Ask your student what "kindergarten coloring" means.
Grade 1. CUBISM AND COLOR
First grade students created Cubist portraits then colored them with assigned colors. Afterwards, the class worked colaboratively to arrange their portratis into a spectrum of color.
Grade 2: Formal training on Formal Elements
Grade 2 students in the Highland Park Art studio are walking through the seven Elements of design: line, shape, form, space, color, value, and texture. Throughout the year this will include lessons that focus on a particular Element of Design, including notes in their sketchbooks to help guide class discussions. Currently, we are focusing on Form. Students in grade two collaboratively created abstract sculpture out of paper.
Grade 3: Color Theory
Grade 3 students in the Highland Park Art studio are studying COLOR THEORY. This includes how to read a color wheel, how to understand the relationships between colors, and how to create color. They are then using painting skills to apply this knowledge.
Grade 4: The Power of Advertising
Grade 4 students in the the Highland Park Art studio are working on their FIRE PREVENTION POSTERS. Each year 4th and 5th grade students around the country participate in creating posters that promote fire prevention awareness. Here at Highland Park students looked to product advertisment and design that has a strong branding. We discussed target adiences, how elements such as shape and color affect our perseptions, and how to create a professional looking product that is both eye catching and promotes a message.
Grade 5: Coexistence of Man and Nature
Grade 5 students in the Highland Park Art studio are creating mixed-media landscapes centered on the theme of the "coexistence of man and nature". Man-made architecture is collaged together using newspaper and then integrated into a natural environment using a variety of markmaking in pen and ink. When using mark making techniques students focus on how different marks create different textures.
