Exciting Math News!

Thanks for the Gumball!

The gumball race to Martin Mustang Math Fact Mastery is on! All students in grades 2 through 5 are learning and practicing their math fact fluency strategies. Grade 2 – 5 students are enrolled in Fast Math, an online fact fluency program where students log on to practice their math facts in addition,

subtraction, multiplication and division. Teachers are also assessing students’ math fact fluency with paper and pencil assessments. Once a student has mastered the operation that they are working on, either through Fastt Math or on his/her timed test in the classroom, the student receives a

congratulatory certificate, his/her name goes up on the Math Fact Masters board in the lobby and the grade level gumball machine gets a gumball. Grades 2 through 5 are trying to fill up their grade level gumball machine for each of the grade level operations. Please have your child(ren) practice the

math facts at home as well – math fact fluency is the key to being a successful mathematician!

The grade level expectations for Math Fact Mastery are:

Grade 2 Addition and Subtraction Facts 0 -9

Grade 3 Addition and Subtraction Facts 0 – 12, Multiplication Facts 0 – 12

Grades 4 & 5 Addition and Subtraction Facts 0 – 12

Multiplication and Division Facts 0 – 12

In other exciting Math News, the 2016 - 2017 Martin Mustangs Math Olympiads Team has been in full swing since November and our Olympiads are digging deep into their mathematical understandings. They have been busy solving higher order math problems both independently and

in groups, and you can expect to hear some terrific math dialogue while students continue to sharpen their skills with Mathematical Practice #3 – Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Math Olympiads is a world- wide program and competition that allows students

to explore challenging math problems and promotes higher order thinking skills.  Math Rocks!   If you have any questions, please contact Diane Ozmun, Martin Numeracy Coach, 860-647- 3367 ext. 21436 or email b55dozmu@mpspride.org.
